An anonymous buyer has purchased a copy of Super Mario Bros. : the box of the game had of course never been opened.

New record ! How long ago the time when retrogaming only interested a handful of fanatics, nostalgic for a bygone era. This time when it was possible to acquire remarkable pieces for a pittance. Today, the price of machines - and games - from the 80s can reach sky highs.

A cartridge never used

About a month ago, we had already heard of a record for a copy of Super Mario 64 which had reached 1,56 million dollars during an auction. Record which will therefore only have held for a few weeks since The Verge evokes this time the sale of a copy - always perfectly new and never opened - of Super Mario Bros., the NES game of 1985, for the modest sum of 2 million dollars.

Note, however, that the process was a little different from traditional auctions in that "our" copy of Super Mario Bros. walked through the Rally site. This effectively proposes to “cut” collector items into shares that buyers/investors can afford. Then, when the item in question is about to be sold, its investors can accept the transaction and share the proceeds.

However, this system does not change the fact that the value of certain video game monuments is now far from what it was. When is the next record?
